2nd Grade Curriculum

This grade level brochure is designed to provide you with an overview of the challenging curriculum we offer our students. It identifies key curriculum concepts for 2nd grade but it is not meant to be all-inclusive.

Mission Statement

Epiphany Catholic School provides a student-focused, standards-driven and secure educational environment, based upon the Gospel values, that promotes the spiritual, emotional, moral, intellectual and physical development of all students.

Language Arts – Reading

  • Construct complete sentences which demonstrate subject/verb agreement, correct capitalization, and punctuation.
  • Recognize and spell memory and pattern words.
  • Use prewriting strategies to develop a paragraph that includes a topic sentence, supporting details, and a conclusion.
  • Write for a variety of purposes.
  • Clarify meaning using reading strategies (reread, read ahead, use visual and context clues, ask questions, use prior knowledge and prediction).
  • Summarize the content of a text.
  • Apply word analysis skills to recognize new words.
  • Identify the literary elements of theme, setting, plot, and character within literary works.

Mathematics

  • Demonstrate knowledge of place value (ones, tens, hundreds, thousands).
  • Solve addition and subtraction problems within 200.
  • Add and subtract specified whole numbers with and without regrouping.
  • Recognize, write, and compare whole numbers and whole number groupings.
  • Solve one and two step problems with whole numbers.
  • Solve problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, pennies.
  • Compose two-dimensional shapes with specified attributes.
  • Measure units of time using appropriate instruments.
  • Collect and interpret data using pictures, tallies, tables, charts, and bar graphs.
  • Identify and model fractions using concrete materials and pictorial representations.

Science

  • Identify structures and properties of matter.
  • Identify interdependent relationships in ecosystems.
  • Identify and compare processes that shape the Earth.
  • Analyze data, draw conclusions, and communicate the results.
  • Record and store data using technology.
  • Compare observations of individual and group results.

Social Studies

  • Identify physical characteristics of places, both local and global.
  • Identify the characteristics and purposes of geographic representations (maps, globes, graphs, photographs, and software).
  • Explain why individuals, groups, and events are celebrated with local, state, or national holidays.
  • Identify how people and groups in the past made economic choices (crops, products to trade) to survive and improve their lives.
  • Describe how people in different times and places viewed the world in different ways.
  • Explain how trade among people brought an exchange of ideas, technology, and language.

Religion & Character Formation

  • Prepare for and receive the sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist.
  • Prepare for and participate in liturgical celebrations (weekly masses, Adoration, Stations of the Cross, the Rosary, the Feast of Corpus Christi, visits to the Blessed Sacrament, and May Crowning).
  • Participate in school-wide service projects.
  • Recite Act of Contrition, Hail Holy Queen, Fatima Prayer, St. Michael, and the Apostle’s Creed.
  • Discuss the lives of the saints.
  • Introduce the parts of the mass (Liturgy of the Word, Liturgy of the Eucharist).
  • Foster the virtues of respect, optimism, generosity, honesty, prudence, patience, responsibility, and morality.
  • Attend CGS once a week

Computer

  • Practice proper keyboarding positioning and posture while typing.
  • Identify major hardware components and describe their functions.
  • Demonstrate proper care of computer hardware, software, peripherals, and storage media.
  • Identify responsible and safe online behavior.
  • Use word processing programs to develop writing skills.
  • Use teacher selected Internet resources to complete assigned tasks.
  • Use software which emphasizes problem solving strategies and promotes creative thinking.
  • Practice using Chrome devices
  • Understand how to navigate and create using the Seesaw learning platform.

Foreign Language – Spanish

  • Read, write, and communicate numbers 1-31 in Spanish.
  • Read, write, and communicate simple questions and answers in Spanish.
  • Follow oral directions in Spanish with visual cues.
  • Sing and play simple songs and games in Spanish.
  • Pray simple Catholic prayers in Spanish.

Fine Arts – Art

  • Describe and identify between foreground, middle ground, background, texture, color schemes (cool/warm, light/dark).
  • Use of basic principles of elements and design (color, shape, space).
  • Continue to use creative thinking, imagination, and observation when creating original art.
  • Identify and discuss uses of movement, objects, and images in artwork and how to relate to everyday life.

Fine Arts – Music

  • Play classroom instruments, sing, and dance.
  • Imitate different (high/low, loud/soft, fast/slow, long/short).
  • Interpret simple musical notation using quarter, eighth, and half notes.
  • Read pentatonic melodies from the treble clef staff.
  • Create short melodies, rhythms or movements within guidelines.
  • Listen actively to music and identify different elements of the music.

Physical Education & Health

  • Identify the immediate and long-term effects of exercise and the lack of exercise.
  • Demonstrate the importance of cooperation and emotional control when participating in fitness activities.
  • Maintain body control while performing complex motor activities.
  • Demonstrate appropriate techniques for lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling.

Resource

Epiphany School offers assistance with a variety of skills and in all academic areas for students with a demonstrated need. The Epiphany Resource Program collaborates with Unit 5 to meet the needs of these students. Contact the Epiphany Resource teacher regarding any educational concerns in the following areas: academic evaluations, speech and language development, motor skills, and behavioral, health, vision, hearing, and social/emotional concerns.
