1st Grade Curriculum

This grade level brochure is designed to provide you with an overview of the challenging curriculum we offer our students. It identifies key curriculum concepts for 1st grade but it is not meant to be all-inclusive.

Mission Statement

Epiphany Catholic School provides a student-focused, standards-driven, and secure educational environment, based upon the Gospel values, that promotes the spiritual, emotional, moral, intellectual, and physical development of all students.

Religion & Character Formation

  • Identify 7 Sacraments.
  • Understand 10 Commandments.
  • Compare and contrast the 12 Apostles.
  • Pray Hail Mary, Glory Be, Our Father, Guardian Angel, and Grace Before Meals.
  • Observe Holy Days/Feast Days.
  • Participate in Lent/Advent.
  • Study miracles.
  • Discuss the lives of the saints.
  • Listen to Bible Stories.
  • Prepare for and participate in liturgical celebrations (weekly masses, Adoration, Stations of the Cross, the Rosary, the Feast of Corpus Christi, visits to the Blessed Sacrament).
  • Participate in school-wide service projects.
  • Foster the virtues of kindness, respect, optimism, generosity, honesty, prudence, patience, responsibility, and morality.
  • Weekly visits to the Catechesis of the Good Shepard atria.

Language Arts – Reading

  • Recognize and spell memory and pattern words.
  • Read for meaning using fluency and expression.
  • Read independently for pleasure.
  • Know short and long vowel sounds.
  • Know blending sounds.
  • Apply phonics skills when reading.
  • Express ideas effectively when speaking and writing.
  • Begin to apply steps to writing process.
  • Form letters, words and numbers correctly.
  • Use appropriate spacing in written language.

Mathematics

  • Apply problem solving strategies.
  • Solve addition and subtraction facts using numbers 0-40.
  • Identify place value (ones, tens, hundreds).
  • Compare whole numbers using symbols to represent “less than”, “greater than”, and “equal to”.
  • Use instruments to measure (time, distance, weight, temperature, and volume).
  • Recognize simple fractions.
  • Identify basic 2-dimensional shapes and 3-dimensional solids.
  • Create and read graphs, charts, and tables.
  • Counts by 1s, 5s and 10s to 120.
  • Counts by 2s to 50.
  • Tells time to the half-hour and hour.
  • Order and compare length measurements as numbers.
  • Identify pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters.

Science

  • Use maps, charts, and graphs.
  • Incorporate use of the scientific method within experiments.
  • Identify the five senses.
  • Differentiate between living and nonliving things.
  • Classify different animal groups and habitats.
  • Identify the differences between the three states of matter.
  • Understand the importance of keeping the body healthy.
  • Identify functions of main body parts.
  • Understand the components of the earth’s land, water, and atmosphere.
  • Recognize forces in nature.

Social Studies

  • Use maps, graphs, and charts.
  • Describe the importance of influential people in history.
  • Distinguish between past, present, and future.
  • Participate in traditions from cultures around the world.

Foreign Language – Spanish

  • Read, write, and communicate colors and numbers 1-20 in Spanish.
  • Understand Spanish letter sounds
  • Follow oral directions in Spanish with visual cues.
  • Sing and play simple songs and games in Spanish.
  • Pray basic Catholic prayers in Spanish.

Computer

  • Identify major hardware components and describe their functions.
  • Demonstrate proper care of hardware components.
  • Distinguish between left and right side of the keyboard.
  • Practice using both hands while typing.
  • Use word processor/graphic organizer for learning tasks.
  • Use teacher selected Internet sites to complete assigned tasks.
  • Use software which emphasizes problem solving strategies, promotes creative thinking, and helps to develop writing skills.
  • Practice using Chrome devices.
  • Understand how to navigate and create using the Seesaw learning platform.

Fine Arts – Art

  • Recognize the use of art in everyday life.
  • Identify and describe works of art using art elements (lines, shape, color, texture, form, and balance).
  • Use different techniques (sizes, shapes, overlapping, foreground, and background) to show proportion.
  • Use skills and knowledge to create a 2D-3D work of art by demonstrating the safe use of tools and materials.

Fine Arts – Music

  • Play classroom instruments, sing, and dance.
  • Maintain steady beat and move body to a steady beat.
  • Recognize differences in sounds (high/low, loud/soft, fast/slow, long/short).
  • Demonstrate different voices (singing, speaking, shouting, and whispering).
  • Identify voice, classroom instrument, and environmental sounds.
  • Read rhythms with quarter notes, eighth notes, and quarter rests.
  • Read melodies with Sol, Mi, and La.
  • Create rhythms and movements within guidelines.

Physical Education & Health

  • Identify important reasons for being physically fit.
  • Perform different locomotor and non-locomotor skills at different speeds, directions, and levels while maintaining body control.
  • Demonstrate complex motor activities with musical accompaniment.
  • Demonstrate proper and safe form with the use of PE equipment.

Resource

Epiphany School offers assistance with a variety of skills and in all academic areas for students with a demonstrated need. The Epiphany Resource Program collaborates with Unit 5 to meet the needs of these students.
